The Mediterranean is an inter-continental sea that spans from the Atlantic Ocean (its western neighbor) to Asia on the east. It separates Europe from Africa and has been referred to as the “incubator of Western civilization.” It is an ancient sea which laps on the shores of scores of countries. Part of it seems nearly land-locked while other portions of the sea span for miles and miles with no land in sight. From east to west it spans from the Straits of Gibraltar between Spain and Morocco to the Gulf of Iskendrum on the southwestern coast of Turkey, making it nearly 4,000 km (2,500 miles) in that direction. From north to south is about 800 km (500 miles) the northernmost point being Croatia’s southernmost shores and Libya. Altogether the Mediterranean Sea, including the Sea of Marmara (on Turkey’s shores), is an area of approximately 2,510,900 km2 (970,000 square miles). It is connected to the Red Sea by the Suez Canal.

Israel has 150 km (about 93 miles) of coastline on the Mediterranean Sea. Of those 50 km (31 miles) of shoreline are closed to the public for use as ports, infrastructure, security and industry. The beaches open for public bathing are designated with signs and have lifeguard posts. Jellyfish arrive on Israel beaches when the water temperatures are 26o Celsius and higher. The luscious blue waters and fine grain sand are a real tourist asset.
