Masada fortress

Visit this spectacular mountain refuge on the Dead Sea for Jews escaping from the Roman legions after the destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70 of the first century. They lived within the well-preserved ruins of Herod the Great's luxurious palaces, storerooms and bathhouses, built over 100 years earlier, and which visitors today can still walk through, including one of the earliest synagogues in the world, in use even while the Temple in Jerusalem still stood. Marvel at the courage of those last Jewish defenders, many of whom committed suicide rather than be enslaved or massacred by the Roman soldiers.
