The modern town of Caesarea is located mid-way between Tel Aviv and Haifa along the Mediterranean coast, on the outskirts of the ancient port city of Caesarea Maritima. It was Herod who built its sea harbor, starting in 22 BCE. It went through periods of grandeur and of ruin for the next 1900 years.

Upon the establishment of the State of Israel, the Rothschild family (who owned much of the land) made certain stipulations regarding the town that went a long way towards creating and maintaining the beautiful garden city that it is today.

Caesarea offers a variety of activity for tourists: Visit the ancient port and Roman amphitheater; don’t miss the Caesarea Experience, a riveting movie that takes you through Caesarea’s history from Herod through to modern times; have a face-to-face meeting with the figures who were involved over the centuries, and actually get to ask them questions!

All in all, Caesarea should not be missed. It’s an easy ride from Tel Aviv or Haifa, or you can spend some time in one of the city’s lovely hotels, and enjoy the beautiful beach as well.
